The Sophia Antipolis technology park, known around the world for scientific and technological research and development, is located on an exceptional site of 2,400 hectares between the sea and the mountains.
In 1969, Sophia Antipolis was a small business park and became by the end of the 1970s a thriving technology park. Internationally-renowned companies, research institutes, universities and major schools now call the town of Biot Sophia Antipolis home.
In 1960, Pierre Laffitte, founder of Sophia Antipolis, wanted to create a “Countryside Latin Quarter” based on professional exchanges and scientific research, encouraged by cultural exchanges in a natural environment. At the time, people were leaving the city centres. Pierre Laffitte summarised his idea in a catchphrase: “cross-fertilisation” – research, businesses and higher education.
In 1969 the idea became a reality in the middle of the scrubland of the Valbonne Plateau. Pierre Laffitte came up with the name when he was director of the Ecole des Mines School in Paris, though it was only in 1985 that it was baptised. His wife Sophie inspired the first part of the name as well as a square in the park, Place Sophie Laffitte. The second part, Antipolis, is the name of Antibes in Ancient Greek.
