The word appears to come from the Netherlands, where the game was called “colf”, from the German word “kolbe” (club). In the 16th century, there were several mentions of the words “gouff” or “golf” in official texts. Finally, when club houses were introduced, the word golf remained. The word is also confirmed on a document dated 1457.
